Woods likes Wie’s chances in Japan

MIYAZAKI — Tiger Woods thinks Michelle Wie has a good chance of making the cut in the men’s Casio World Open next week.
Wie arrived in Japan on Saturday, five days ahead of her appearance in the Casio World Open, a Japanese men’s tour event.
“She certainly has the talent to make the cut,” said Woods, who took a one-stroke lead over Jim Furyk on Saturday at the Dunlop Phoenix tournament.
“I can’t really say anything about the course because I’ve never played there,” said Woods. “But she has all the talent in the world and if she puts it together, I don’s see any reason why she can’t make the cut.”
Wie will be taking part in a tournament in Japan for the first time. Woods, who is a veteran of playing in Asia, said that will be something new for the 16-year-old Wie.
“It’s the first time for her as a pro in Japan and the pressure will be very new to her but I think she’ll handle it well,” said Woods.
Wie, who turned professional last month, will be only the second woman to appear in a Japanese men’s tour event. Sophie Gustafson played in the 2003 Casio World Open, where the Swedish pro failed to make the cut.
